Medical Writing Master Classes are run by an experienced professional medical writer and trainer, Dr John Carpenter. Each participant will be asked to submit an example of their writing (preferably a manuscript in progress) in advance of the workshop for Dr Carpenter to analyse. During the Master Class, Dr Carpenter will discuss the submitted work and use extracts from the manuscripts as exercises and as examples of good and poor technique.
All Master Class particpants will have their own manuscript corrected by Dr Carpenter.

Who Should Attend?
- Medical Writing Master Classes are intended for scientists and healthcare professionals who already have moderate experience of writing in English but who want to enhance their knowledge and skills.
- These Master Classes are presented in English and are highly interactive. Attendees must therefore be prepared to participate in discussions in English.
Workshops
Participants are expected to contribute examples of their work in advance of the event. During the Master Class, the presenter will use extracts from these contributions as examples of how writing can be improved and as the basis of exercises.
- Structure and ease of reading: what makes sentences difficult/easy to read, punctuation for clarity, using paragraphs
- Getting to the point: how long is too long? how to present your results, graphs and tables
- Jargon, abbreviations and acronyms: when and when not to use jargon, why and when to use abbreviations
- Grammar, syntax and spelling: common problems with tenses, using definite and indefinite articles, word order and undefined pronouns
- Individual feedback and discussion
Faculty
The course is led by professional trainer and practitioner John Carpenter (PhD). Dr Carpenter was a member of the European Medical Writers’ Association (EMWA). He was a member of the group that in 2005 developed the EMWA guidelines on the role of medical writers in developing peer-reviewed publications. For many years he has been developing and delivering training workshops for the pharmaceutical industry and medical professionals.
